Hey! Did you know that half of each year the South Pole is tilted toward the sun causing the seasonal phenom known as the winter solstice? And because the earth is tilted like that the Northern Hemisphere experiences longer periods of darkness? Plus, did you know that word 'solstice' literally means 'the sun stands still'? Cool, huh?
Throughout history folks have celebrated the first peek of sunlight after the darkest period of the year - The Winter Solstice. How about you and I doing the same? Why don't you take off those mittens and let's get started.
So, you have all the stuff needed to make this wintery project, right? You've got the ruler, pencil, and colored pencil, don't you?

Though this post was written in the latter months of last year, it contains a great activity with which to graph the shortened days of the Winter Solstice. I'm re-posting to give educators a quick reminder that this lesson may be something they would like to plan to do sometime in the upcoming months.
